The percussion instruments of India are many and varied. Of these, the Tabla is the most widely used medium of rhythm in North India for the last three centuries. The origin of the Tabla is traced to a long shelled Arabian drum, and the present day set of two drums with separate heads is believed to be one of the innovation of that many faceted genius, Amir Khusrau, who flourished during the reign of Allauddin Khilji in delhi in the 13th century.
This two pieces drum is covered with skin and played with both hands. The one played with the right hand is known as the tabla and that played with the left, is called the dugga or bayan. The tabla is usually hollowed out of a block of wood, while the dugga is made of a clay or copper. The skin cover on each drum are tried to leather loops firmly stretched over its body by means of leather braces. Besides, cylindrical blocks of wood are wedged between the braces and the wall of the tabla to facilitate adjustment of tonal pitch. The tabla is tuned to the key-note of the music to be performed while the dugga gives a bass note. Like the playing of drums in the West, Tabla playing in India is a very difficult art and needs long years practice to achieve skill and mastery. In point of sheer subtlety skill and mastery. In point of sheer subtlety and complexity -- the rhythms of India are, however, in a class by themselves.
As and accompaniment, the tabla can lend itself to almost all the patterns of rhythm and cross-rhythms that a musicians can conjure up in the course of his recital. In solo recitals, master-players can weave hundreds of subtle and graceful patterns of rhythm in a thrilling manner, revealing is the process a variety of stylizations, such as kayada, tukra, peshkara, paran, gat, mohra and the like.
